Egypt and Australia have dominated news headlines this week; Egypt suffering through a political disaster, Australia experiencing the greatest natural disaster to ever occur in that nation.
Egypt’s people are demonstrating for “freedom.” However, violent clashes between competing groups have brought the country to a standstill. Christians are living in hope and fear. Hope that the protests will lead to more freedom for worship…fear of the opportunity for extremist groups to exploit the situation. Response? A coming together to pray in homes since churches are considered unsafe. Prayer for the president to do what is good for Egypt and prayer for more freedom to worship. Prayer for unity - some choose to demonstrate as they are part of the society and community; on the other hand, some church leaders have asked Christians to stay away from the demonstrations and focus on prayer. Let’s pray for our brothers and sisters at this time.
Australia’s violence has come from nature - the greatest natural disaster to ever occur in that nation. Christians are working hard in the relief effort, but also in the bringing of comfort to those who have lost family, homes, properties, and livelihood. They ask that we pray for God’s light to shine in this time of tragedy; in particular, that Australians would think through what’s important to them and turn to Creator God. As we personally respond to John 9 this week, consider God’s work worldwide. Praise God that He is Sovereign…and that His purposes will be revealed.
“This happened so that the works of God might be displayed...” and pray for God’s light to shine in these times of tragedy - “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world...” [John 9:3-5]
